The National Committee on Geographical Names, in its meeting on 29/10/2015, which was held in its permanent, headquarters in Royal Jordanian Geographic Centre agreed to issue a special dictionary for geographical names in Jordan includes the name in Arabic language and its equivalent in Roman letters (Romanization) before the end of this year.
Also the Committee represented by its chairman Brigadier General Dr. Eng. Awni Kasawneh, Chairman of the Higher National Committee on Geographical Names, agreed that this Dictionary should include the site, its coordinates, location, scale, maps and Geographic idioms according to the alphabetical arrangement. This Dictionary will be printed at the beginning of next year.
This Committee aims to protect, unify and preserve the identity of the geographical names, as a culture, social, historical and religious legacy.
Dr. Kasawneh mentioned that they discussed issuing the 3rd edition of the Geographical Names Magazine before the end of 2016. Also the Committee discussed launching the website of the Arab Division of Experts on Geographical Names.
Dr. Kasawneh praised the efforts of members of the National Committee in preparing researches and scientific studies to be published in the Magazine.
He pointed out that Geographical Names represent the identity of places and population, also they are considered of social, economic and historical value, mentioning its importance in making maps, atlases and dictionaries.
The National Committee includes members of: Department of Land & Survey, Ministry of Interior, Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, the Jordan Academy of Arabic, Municipality of Amman, Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority.
